Red lights

Brake system warning

What it means

This warning can indicate a brake-system fault or that the parking brake is applied. Red signals a potentially serious braking problem, but the symbol and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer; consult the owner's manual.

What the symbol looks like: A red circle with an exclamation mark, often enclosed by curved brackets and sometimes accompanied by the word BRAKE.

Why it comes on

  • The parking brake is applied or not fully released
  • Low brake fluid
  • A hydraulic leak or pressure problem
  • A fault in the brake system or its warning switch

What to do

  1. Check that the parking brake is fully released.
  2. If the light stays on, pull over safely and stop.
  3. Check the owner's manual for the warning's meaning on your vehicle.
  4. Do not drive if braking feels different, fluid is leaking, or the warning remains; arrange assistance.

Can I keep driving?

If the warning remains after releasing the parking brake, do not continue driving until the cause is understood. Avoid high speeds and do not rely on the vehicle if braking feels weak or unusual.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
