Amber and yellow lights

Blind spot monitor

What it means

This indicator shows that the blind spot monitoring system is active, has detected a vehicle, or may be unavailable, depending on its display and behaviour. Amber often indicates a warning or limitation, but colour and meaning vary by manufacturer; check the owner’s manual.

What the symbol looks like: A vehicle symbol beside a marked area or rays near its rear corner, often displayed in an exterior mirror.

Why it comes on

  • A vehicle is detected in the monitored blind spot.
  • A sensor is blocked by dirt, snow, ice, or a trailer.
  • Poor weather or road spray is limiting sensor performance.
  • A fault in a blind spot sensor or system.

What to do

  1. Check mirrors and look over your shoulder before changing lanes.
  2. Do not change lanes solely because the indicator is off.
  3. When safe, clear dirt, snow, or ice from the system’s sensor areas.
  4. If an amber fault warning persists, consult the owner’s manual and arrange an inspection.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally continue driving, but use mirrors and shoulder checks and do not rely on blind spot monitoring. Avoid lane changes until you have checked that the lane is clear.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
