Who made Yugo?

Yugo was a small hatchback built by Zastava in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia. Zastava had a long history of working with Fiat, and its cars brought Italian engineering into Yugoslav motoring. The Yugo became especially familiar in the United States, where it offered a compact, simple form of everyday transport.

The car’s small size and straightforward design suited city streets and practical daily use. Its distinctive name and place in American car culture made it a memorable part of Zastava’s story.

Yugo models and years

The United States EPA listings cover two versions: the GV, from 1986 to 1989, and the GV Plus, listed for 1990. Both were compact hatchbacks, rather than separate branches of a large model family.

The GV Plus followed the GV in the range. The GV ran for longer in these listings, while the Plus name identified the version shown for 1990.

Engines, economy and power

The GV and GV Plus appear in official United States EPA figures. EPA test results use a different procedure from European WLTP or NEDC figures and Canada’s five-cycle test, so consumption figures from different markets are not directly comparable.

The GV and GV Plus were petrol hatchbacks, part of Yugo’s straightforward approach to small-car motoring.

Where Yugo cars appear

The United States EPA listings show the GV from 1986 to 1989, followed by the GV Plus in 1990. These compact cars brought Zastava’s Yugoslav-built hatchback to American drivers and gave the Yugo name a lasting place in the story of Yugoslav carmaking.
