    Component
    EXTERIOR LIGHTING:FOG LIGHTS
    Defect
ON CERTAIN MINI VANS AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE SOCKET HOLDER IN THE FOG LIGHTS IS INSTALLED IN THE LAMP CASING USING PRESSURE. DURING OPERATION OF THE FOG LIGHT, THE HEAT FROM THE BULB CAN EXPAND THE SOCKET HOLDER. THE EXPANSION CAN FORCE THE SOCKET HOLDER REARWARD. AFTER REPEATEDLY BEING SUBJECT TO THIS EXPANSION, IF THE FOG LIGHT IS ALSO SUBJECTED TO VIBRATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, THE SOCKET HOLDER WITH THE BULB HOLDER AND THE WIRING HARNESS MAY SEPARATE FROM THE FOG LIGHT CASING.
    Consequence

  22. Front seat belt buckle buttons may break

Reported May 24, 1995Model years 1989–1991NHTSA campaign 95V103005360,433 vehicles affected

A release button can break, allowing pieces into the buckle and causing it to work improperly. The seat belt may not protect an occupant adequately in a crash. Check both buckles; a dealer will repair or replace a faulty buckle free of charge. A remedy for buttons that are not broken is being developed.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
    Defect
THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.
    Consequence
THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
    Remedy
OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.

  23. Rear brake linings may cause inconsistent braking

Reported February 27, 1992Model years 1990–1991NHTSA campaign 92V02700095,074 vehicles affected

Rear brake lining friction may increase as the brakes wear, causing inconsistent braking and premature anti-lock brake system activation. This may cause sudden stops or longer braking distances. The rear brake assemblies will be replaced with assemblies whose friction characteristics do not change.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DRUM:SHOES/LININGS
    Defect
THE REAR BRAKE LININGS CAN CHANGE OVER TIME. AS THE BRAKES WEAR, THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION CAN INCREASE, PRODUCING INCONSISTENT REAR BRAKE PERFORMANCE AND PREMATURE ACTIVATION OF THE ABS SYSTEM.
    Consequence
INCONSISTENT BRAKING AND PREMATURE ACTIVATION OF THE ABSSYSTEM CAN CAUSE SUDDEN STOPS OR INCREASED BRAKING DISTANCES, AND RESULT ININCREASED RISK OF VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
    Remedy
REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLIES WITH ASSEMBLIES WHOSE FRICTION CHARACTERISTICS DO NOT CHANGE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF PREMATURE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATION.

  24. Brake shoes may cause excessive braking at low speed

Reported September 11, 1991Model years 1989NHTSA campaign 91V16100029,824 vehicles affected

The brake shoes may produce more braking force than expected at low speeds, causing the rear brakes to lock and making the vehicle difficult to control. The brake shoe assembly will be replaced with an improved assembly.

    Defect
WHEN APPLYING THE FOOT (SERVICE) BRAKE IN THE LOW VEHICLE SPEED CONDITION, THE BRAKING POWER PRODUCED MAY BE MORE THAN EXPECTED.
    Consequence
THE UNEXPECTED BRAKING POWER COULD RESULT IN REAR BRAKELOCKUP AND THE VEHICLE BECOMING DIFFICULT TO CONTROL.
    Remedy
REPLACE BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY WITH IMPROVED ASSEMBLY.

  25. Brake power assist may fail in cold temperatures

Reported January 22, 1991Model years 1989NHTSA campaign 91V0130006,680 vehicles affected

Below 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees C), assembly lubricant may stick to the check valve and prevent it from working. Brake power assist could be lost, reducing braking ability and potentially causing an accident. The vacuum hose assembly will be replaced.

    Official NHTSA recall text

    Defect
WHEN THE VEHICLE IS EXPOSED TO TEMPERATURES BELOW 5 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (-15 DEGREES C), THE NEUTRAL DETERGENT USED AS AN ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT MAY STICK TO THE CHECK VALVE, PREVENTING VALVE FROM FUNCTIONING.
    Consequence
THIS COULD CAUSE AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE POWER ASSIST WHICHDESCREASES BRAKING ABILITY, AND PRESENTS A POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT.
    Remedy
    REPLACE VACUUM HOSE ASSEMBLY.
