OBD-II fault code

U3552: Hydrogen Tank A Valve Performance

What it means

Hydrogen Tank A Valve Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Tank A’s valve controls hydrogen flow from that tank when the fuel-cell system requests it. The controller compares the valve’s reported response with its command; this code sets when the valve circuit appears electrically intact but the valve does not respond as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve stuck mechanically
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related communication codes to see whether the fault is isolated to Tank A’s valve or part of a network problem.
  2. Compare Tank A valve commands and reported status in live data, if available, and note when they disagree.
  3. With the vehicle safely powered down according to its service instructions, inspect Tank A valve connections and nearby wiring for damage, corrosion, or signs of interference.
  4. Have a qualified technician check whether the gateway is routing the valve command and status messages correctly.
  5. If network faults are present, have the CAN bus and terminating resistance checked against the manufacturer’s specification before condemning the valve.
  6. If wiring and communications are sound, have the Tank A valve inspected for binding or failure using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded Tank A valve connector or wiring.
  • Correct a gateway configuration or communication-routing fault.
  • Repair the CAN network or replace an out-of-spec termination component as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Repair or replace the sticking Tank A valve.

Can I keep driving?

Because a hydrogen tank valve fault can trigger reduced-power operation or shutdown, avoid relying on the vehicle for normal travel; stop safely if warnings escalate or the vehicle loses power. Have the hydrogen system checked promptly, and do not handle or dismantle its high-pressure components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
