What it means
HVIL loop J voltage below expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The high-voltage interlock loop (HVIL) J monitors continuity through part of the high-voltage system. This code sets when the loop J signal is below its expected range, which can happen when its wire is shorted to ground or the signal is otherwise pulled low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Interlock wire shorted to ground
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related HVIL or communication faults, confirming whether loop J is specifically identified.
- Check live data for the loop J signal or status and verify that it is low while the fault is present.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect accessible loop J wiring for rubbed-through insulation, pinching, or contact with grounded parts.
- Have a qualified technician test loop J for a short to ground using the manufacturer's circuit test procedure.
- If no circuit short is found, check gateway routing and CAN termination against manufacturer specifications.
Common fixes
- Repair loop J wiring that is chafed or shorted to ground.
- Repair damaged terminals or secure a faulty loop J connector.
- Correct a confirmed gateway routing fault.
- Repair CAN termination if testing finds it outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
A low loop J signal can make the vehicle disable high-voltage functions or enter limp mode. Avoid driving if power is reduced or warnings are present, and leave high-voltage circuit checks to a qualified technician.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
