What it means
The control module detected battery voltage outside its acceptable operating window. Either too low (drained battery, weak charging) or too high (charging system overvoltage).
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
Vehicle control modules monitor their supply voltage to operate within a safe range. U3003 is set when the reporting module detects battery voltage outside its acceptable operating window, which can result from low supply or charging-system overvoltage and may disrupt other electronics.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Battery aged or sulfated
- Alternator regulator fault (over- or undervoltage)
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data to see whether the voltage event was low or high and which modules recorded it.
- Inspect the battery terminals, main connections, and grounds for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation under the manufacturer's specified test conditions.
- Measure voltage at the affected module's power and ground circuits and compare the results with the manufacturer's specification.
- If voltage is stable at the battery but not at the module, trace the supply wiring, fuses, and grounds for excessive loss or intermittent connection.
Common fixes
- Clean and tighten corroded or loose battery terminals and grounds.
- Replace a battery that fails the manufacturer's condition test.
- Repair charging-system wiring or replace a faulty regulator or alternator if testing confirms overvoltage or inadequate charging.
- Repair a damaged fuse, power feed, or ground causing voltage loss at the affected module.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid unnecessary driving until the voltage fault is checked if multiple warning lights appear, the engine cranks weakly, or charging warnings are present. Overvoltage can damage electronics, while low voltage can cause modules to shut down or the vehicle to stall.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
