OBD-II fault code

U3000: Control Module

What it means

Generic fault on the control module itself — internal self-diagnostic flagged a problem with computation, memory, drivers or other internal subsystems.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

U3000 is a control-module fault code whose exact meaning depends on which module stores it and any accompanying subtype or status information. The module sets it when its self-diagnostics detect an internal control or processing fault; the code alone does not establish that the module needs replacement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Identify which module stored U3000 and record any subtype, status, and companion codes, since the meaning depends on the reporting module.
  2. Check battery and charging voltage and inspect that module’s fuses, power, ground, and connectors for interruptions that can cause internal fault reports.
  3. Scan other modules for communication codes and determine whether the problem is isolated or affects the wider network.
  4. Inspect the module’s network wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, and test the circuits using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. If supply and network circuits are sound, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic information for that module’s self-test and software or configuration checks.

Common fixes

  • Correct low system voltage or a poor module power or ground connection.
  • Clean and secure corroded connectors or repair damaged wiring.
  • Correct a confirmed network or gateway routing fault.
  • Update or configure the module if vehicle-specific service information identifies a software issue.
  • Replace the affected module only when its circuits and specified diagnostic checks confirm an internal failure.

Can I keep driving?

The effect depends on the module: affected functions may stop working, warnings may appear, or the vehicle may limit operation. If the code involves brakes, steering, engine control, or another safety-critical system, stop driving if its function is impaired and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
