What it means
The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart DPF differential pressure sensor D. The ECM cannot read soot loading via this channel and may switch to a model-based estimate.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Particulate filter pressure sensor D measures differential pressure across a diesel particulate filter and sends that information over the vehicle bus. This code sets when communication with sensor D is lost, leaving the ECM without that sensor’s soot-loading data and potentially forcing it to estimate filter condition from other information.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan emissions modules for other DPF pressure, regeneration, and network codes.
- Check live data for sensor D’s communication status and pressure value, and compare it with other DPF pressure channels if available.
- Inspect sensor D’s connector and nearby bus wiring for loose pins, corrosion, abrasion, or heat damage.
- Verify the sensor’s specified power and ground, because a supply fault can make sensor D stop communicating.
- Test the bus wires for an open or short using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer procedures.
- If wiring and supply check out, confirm whether sensor D itself has failed before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean sensor D’s connector.
- Repair a damaged or shorted communication wire to sensor D.
- Restore the sensor’s power or ground.
- Replace particulate filter pressure sensor D if its wiring and supply are sound and the module is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If there are no performance or DPF warnings, limit unnecessary driving and have the fault diagnosed soon. Missing sensor D data can interfere with soot-load estimates and regeneration, potentially leading to an emissions warning or reduced power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
