OBD-II fault code

U0661: Lost Communication With Right Rear Temperature Actuator A

What it means

The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart right-rear HVAC temperature blend door actuator A. Rear-right air temperature falls back to a default position.

How it works

The right-rear temperature actuator A is a smart HVAC component that positions the blend door controlling the temperature of air delivered to the right rear of the cabin. The vehicle network expects messages from this actuator; U0661 sets when those messages stop arriving, so the rear-right temperature control may use a default door position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and review freeze-frame or event data to see whether U0661 appeared with other network faults or after a power interruption.
  2. Use the HVAC controls and scan-tool data, if available, to check whether right-rear temperature actuator A reports status or responds to a temperature command.
  3. Inspect the actuator A connector and nearby right-rear HVAC harness for looseness, corrosion, water intrusion, chafing, or damaged wiring.
  4. Check the actuator's specified power and ground under load, since a missing supply can silence it even when the network wiring is intact.
  5. Test the applicable network wires for open circuits, shorts, and abnormal resistance using the vehicle's wiring diagram and manufacturer procedure.
  6. If power, ground, and network wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's actuator communication test before replacing the right-rear temperature actuator A.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the right-rear temperature actuator A connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring at the actuator A harness.
  • Restore a failed power or ground connection supplying actuator A.
  • Repair an open or short in the network wiring to actuator A.
  • Replace actuator A only after its supply and network circuit test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

This fault usually affects rear-right temperature control rather than basic vehicle operation, so driving is generally possible. Check that the cabin can be kept comfortable and windows clear; arrange diagnosis if other warning lights or communication faults appear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
