OBD-II fault code

U05B4: Invalid Data Received From Driver Monitoring System Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the driver monitoring system (DMS) module. Eye/head-pose tracking values fail plausibility checks and are rejected; ADAS handover features may be inhibited.

How it works

The driver monitoring system module tracks driver attention using eye and head-pose information and shares its status with other vehicle systems. This code sets when a receiving module considers that data implausible and rejects it, which can prevent driver-monitoring or handover features from operating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to see which module rejected the driver monitoring system data and whether related ADAS faults are present.
  2. Check the driver monitoring display or warnings and note whether attention or handover functions are unavailable.
  3. Inspect the DMS camera area for obstruction, dirt, damage, or anything that could interfere with eye or head tracking.
  4. Inspect the DMS module connectors and accessible wiring for looseness, damage, or corrosion.
  5. Use a scan tool to review DMS status and tracking data, then check for CAN or gateway faults affecting those messages.
  6. If the DMS or a receiving module was replaced, verify its software version and vehicle configuration.

Common fixes

  • Clear an obstruction or clean the DMS camera area.
  • Repair damaged or poorly connected DMS wiring or connectors.
  • Correct gateway routing or network configuration if DMS messages are not reaching their destination correctly.
  • Update or configure a replacement module to the required software version.
  • Replace the DMS module if its tracking input or internal operation is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but driver attention monitoring and any ADAS handover features that depend on it may be unavailable. Stay fully engaged in driving and do not rely on those features until they are restored.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
