OBD-II fault code

U05A3: Invalid Data Received From Reductant Quality Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the reductant (DEF/AdBlue) quality sensor module. Concentration values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reductant quality module measures the concentration of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF, also called AdBlue) for the SCR emissions system. U05A3 is set when another module rejects the quality module's reported concentration as implausible; it does not by itself establish that the fluid is poor quality.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify the reporting module and check for reductant, SCR, and network codes.
  2. Review live reductant-quality data and module status for missing, unstable, or implausible concentration readings.
  3. Check the DEF/AdBlue tank contents and service history for contamination or recent filling with the wrong fluid, following the vehicle's handling instructions.
  4. Inspect the quality module's accessible connector and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals.
  5. Check module power, ground, and communication using the manufacturer's procedure, and verify software compatibility if the module or gateway was replaced.
  6. If wiring and fluid condition are sound but readings remain invalid, follow the manufacturer's procedure to isolate the quality sensor module from the receiving controller.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the reductant quality module connector.
  • Correct a module power, ground, or network fault.
  • Drain and refill contaminated reductant only as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Update or configure a replaced module or gateway to the required software.
  • Replace the reductant quality module if its concentration data remains implausible after fluid and circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Arrange prompt diagnosis, particularly if an SCR warning or countdown to a restart restriction is displayed. Avoid ignoring reductant warnings, since emissions-system faults can eventually restrict starting or vehicle operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
