OBD-II fault code

U0546: Invalid Data Received From Entertainment Control Module — Front

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the front entertainment control module. Source select, audio routing or display state values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The front entertainment control module manages front-cabin source selection, audio routing, and display state. Other modules check the data they receive from it for plausibility; this code sets when those reported states fail the checks and are rejected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and communication details to identify which recipient logged U0546 and what front entertainment state was rejected.
  2. Check live data for the front module's source, audio-routing, and display-state reports while operating those functions, and note which report disagrees with the actual behavior.
  3. Inspect the front entertainment module's connectors and wiring for loose pins, damage, or corrosion, and check the display and audio connections relevant to the failed function.
  4. Check service history for a recent front display, audio component, or module replacement or software update that could have caused a configuration mismatch.
  5. Use network diagnostics to check CAN communication and gateway routing for the front entertainment module, then test its reported inputs and outputs using the manufacturer's procedures.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect loose front entertainment wiring and repair damaged or corroded connectors.
  • Correct source, display, or audio configuration after a component replacement or update.
  • Repair or replace a faulty display or audio input component if testing identifies it.
  • Repair or replace the front entertainment control module if its data remains implausible with valid inputs.
  • Correct gateway routing if network testing identifies it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

The front display, audio routing, or source selection may stop working or behave unpredictably. This usually does not affect basic vehicle control, but avoid adjusting the system while driving if it distracts you.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
