OBD-II fault code

U053B: Invalid Data Received From Image Processing Module A

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from image processing module A. Object detections, lane lines or sign recognitions fail plausibility checks against other ADAS sensors and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

Image processing module A analyzes camera images for objects, lane markings, or traffic signs and shares those detections with driver-assistance systems. A receiving module sets U053B when module A's detections fail plausibility checks against other sensor data and are rejected, so affected assistance features may be disabled.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all driver-assistance modules, save freeze-frame data, and identify the receiver reporting U053B and any camera or sensor codes.
  2. Check which camera-based features show warnings or are unavailable, and confirm whether the windshield or camera view is obstructed.
  3. Clean the camera viewing area and inspect the camera housing, windshield, and mounting for damage, dirt, or recent glass work.
  4. Inspect image processing module A's connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, water entry, or damage.
  5. Review live data for object, lane, or sign detections alongside the related radar or other sensor data, if supported.
  6. If module A or the windshield was replaced, verify compatibility, software, and any required calibration using manufacturer procedures; investigate gateway routing if the data is still rejected.

Common fixes

  • Clean the camera viewing area and remove any obstruction affecting image processing module A.
  • Repair damaged, loose, or corroded camera or module wiring and connectors.
  • Perform the specified camera or module calibration after relevant replacement or alignment work.
  • Correct software or configuration compatibility after a module or windshield replacement.
  • Repair gateway routing or replace image processing module A if its detections remain invalid after installation, wiring, and calibration are verified.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on lane, sign, or other camera-based assistance while it is warning or unavailable; steer and judge the road yourself. If the vehicle also reports impaired braking or another safety-system fault, drive only if control feels normal and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
