OBD-II fault code

U0531: Invalid Data Received From Rear Gate Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the rear gate (powered tailgate/liftgate) module. Position, motor current or anti-pinch values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The rear gate module controls or monitors powered tailgate or liftgate operation and reports information such as gate position, motor load, and anti-pinch status over the vehicle network. U0531 is set when a receiving module rejects data from the rear gate module because it is implausible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame details to identify the reporting module and any related tailgate, liftgate, or network codes.
  2. Check live rear gate position, motor load, and anti-pinch status while operating the gate, and compare the reported values with its actual movement.
  3. Inspect the rear gate module connector and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals, especially around moving hinge areas.
  4. Check whether the gate module or powered gate components were recently replaced, and verify software and configuration compatibility.
  5. Use vehicle wiring information and scan-tool network tests to check communication and gateway routing between the rear gate module and the reporting module.
  6. If wiring and network communication are sound, test the rear gate module and receiving module according to the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure loose or corroded connectors at the rear gate module.
  • Correct incompatible software or configuration after a module or gate system replacement.
  • Apply a manufacturer-recommended software update or restore the correct module configuration.
  • Repair or replace the rear gate module, gateway, or receiving module after testing confirms the faulty component.

Can I keep driving?

The powered rear gate may stop, move unpredictably, or lose anti-pinch protection. Keep people clear of the gate, secure it fully before driving, and avoid using powered operation if its movement is abnormal.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
