OBD-II fault code

U052A: Invalid Data Received From Heated Steering Wheel Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the heated steering wheel module. Heater current/voltage or temperature values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The heated steering wheel module controls the wheel heater and reports information such as heater electrical load and temperature over the vehicle network. A receiving module sets U052A when data from that module fails plausibility checks and is rejected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and preserve freeze-frame details to identify the reporting module and any related communication or steering-wheel heater codes.
  2. Check live data for the heater’s reported temperature and electrical status while switching the heated steering wheel on and off, and note whether it heats normally.
  3. Inspect the heated steering wheel module’s accessible connectors and harness for loose pins, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
  4. If the steering wheel or a related module was recently replaced, verify software and configuration compatibility before replacing parts.
  5. Use the vehicle wiring diagram and scan-tool network tests to check communication and gateway routing between the heated steering wheel module and the reporting module.
  6. If the network and configuration are sound, test the receiving module and heater module inputs according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure a loose or corroded connector at the heated steering wheel module or reporting module.
  • Correct an incompatible software version or module configuration after replacement.
  • Apply a manufacturer-recommended software update or configuration correction.
  • Repair or replace the module confirmed faulty by testing.

Can I keep driving?

The code generally affects the heated steering wheel or related functions rather than engine operation. Switch the heater off if it behaves abnormally or the wheel becomes unexpectedly hot, and have the fault checked before using it again.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
