OBD-II fault code

U049F: Invalid Data Received From Transmission Range Control Module

What it means

A control module received invalid data from the transmission range control module. The code identifies a data validity fault; the specific affected function depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The transmission range control module reports information used to identify the selected gear and support transmission control. This code sets when another module receives data from that module that it judges invalid; it does not identify a particular gear-position sensor failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in the transmitting module
  2. Network wiring or connector fault
  3. Module power or ground fault
  4. Software or configuration mismatch

Symptoms

  • Gear selection or transmission operation may be affected
  • Transmission warning or related communication codes may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan every module for transmission and network codes, noting which module reported invalid data from the transmission range control module.
  2. With the vehicle safely stationary, compare the displayed range or gear data with the selector position while moving through the available positions.
  3. Inspect the transmission range control module connector and nearby harness for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or signs of fluid intrusion.
  4. Check the module's power and ground connections and inspect the relevant network wiring and connectors for poor contact, opens, or shorts.
  5. If the wiring and supplies are sound, follow the manufacturer's procedure to assess module data validity and check for software or configuration mismatch.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly seated transmission range control module wiring or connectors.
  • Restore a faulty module power or ground connection.
  • Correct a software or configuration mismatch using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair or replace the transmission range control module if its data remains invalid after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Because gear selection or transmission operation may be affected, avoid driving if the selected gear is unclear, shifting is abnormal, or a transmission warning appears. If the vehicle is operating normally, limit driving and have the fault diagnosed promptly; invalid range data can lead to unexpected operation or reduced power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
