What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the camshaft position actuator module. Phase angle command vs. actual values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The camshaft position control module manages or reports camshaft actuator timing so the engine controller can coordinate valve timing. U042F is set when a receiving module rejects that module's data as implausible; a module or input fault, software mismatch, or gateway routing error may be involved.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data for U042F together with engine, camshaft timing, and communication codes.
- Note any rough running, loss of power, starting trouble, or engine warning, and check whether the fault appeared after timing or module work.
- Inspect the camshaft control module, actuator and sensor connectors, gateway, and visible CAN wiring for oil contamination, damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Use a scan tool to compare camshaft timing commands and reported positions where available, and check for related sensor or actuator faults.
- Verify module software and network routing, then test the camshaft control circuit and timing system against the manufacturer's procedures.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged, loose, or oil-contaminated wiring and connectors at the camshaft control module or related components.
- Repair a confirmed camshaft sensor or actuator fault causing implausible timing data.
- Correct software or configuration incompatibility after module replacement.
- Repair gateway routing or replace the camshaft position control module if testing confirms it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and long trips because incorrect camshaft-control information can reduce engine power or cause rough running, and a related timing fault may worsen. If the engine runs badly, stalls, or enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
