U0352: Software Incompatibility With NOx Sensor C

What it means

A module reports a software version mismatch with NOx sensor C (smart sensor with own ECU) — typically after replacing one of the modules without programming the new unit to match the rest of the network.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

NOx sensor C is a smart exhaust sensor with its own electronics, which measures nitrogen oxides and sends processed data to the vehicle network. A control module checks the sensor's reported software identity and configuration; U0352 sets when sensor C's information is incompatible with the expected setup.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module replaced without programming
  2. Wrong part number for the vehicle
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for NOx, emissions, aftertreatment, and communication codes before clearing faults.
  2. Check whether NOx sensor C or a related module was recently replaced, updated, or configured.
  3. Use a capable scan tool to identify which sensor the vehicle labels C and read its reported identity and software information.
  4. With the exhaust cool, inspect sensor C's wiring and connector for heat damage, corrosion, looseness, or contact with the exhaust.
  5. Check live data and communication status for sensor C and compare its reported values or status with the other NOx sensors if available.
  6. If the wiring is sound and the sensor part is correct, have its software compatibility and vehicle configuration checked against the manufacturer's requirements.

Common fixes

  • Repair heat-damaged, loose, or corroded wiring and connector faults at NOx sensor C.
  • Correct the sensor C configuration if it was set up incorrectly.
  • Program a replacement smart NOx sensor C if the vehicle requires configuration after installation.
  • Replace sensor C with the correct compatible part if its part number or software is unsuitable.
  • Resolve a confirmed network or gateway configuration fault affecting sensor C.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may continue to run, but NOx monitoring and emissions control can be affected, and an emissions warning or reduced-power restriction may follow. Avoid ignoring the fault or using the vehicle for extended trips before checking it.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
