OBD-II fault code

U0311: Software Incompatibility With Drive Motor Control Module

What it means

A module reports a software version mismatch with the drive motor control module — typically after replacing one of the modules without programming the new unit to match the rest of the network.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The drive motor control module manages the traction motor's operation and exchanges software and configuration information with other vehicle modules. U0311 sets when another module detects that the drive motor controller's software or configuration is incompatible with the expected version, often after replacement or incorrect programming.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module replaced without programming
  2. Wrong part number for the vehicle
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save all codes and freeze-frame information, noting any hybrid or electric drive warnings and which modules report communication or compatibility faults.
  2. Check service history for a drive motor control module or related controller replacement or update, and verify the installed part and software identification against the vehicle application.
  3. Review scan-tool data for drive motor controller communication, operating status, and any reduced-power or shutdown messages.
  4. Inspect accessible low-voltage connectors, grounds, and CAN wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections; do not disturb high-voltage components.
  5. Check gateway communication and network condition using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  6. If the wiring and network are sound, have the compatible controller software and configuration installed and verify normal drive system communication.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged or poorly connected low-voltage connector, ground, or CAN wire.
  • Correct the drive motor controller configuration for the vehicle.
  • Reprogram the controller with compatible software.
  • Replace an incompatible or faulty drive motor control module with the specified unit and program it.

Can I keep driving?

If a hybrid or electric drive warning, reduced power, or shutdown message is present, stop when safe and do not continue in traffic; arrange recovery if propulsion is unreliable. A drive motor control fault can reduce or remove motive power, so avoid high-speed or long-distance driving until diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
