U030C: Software Incompatibility With Reductant Quality Module

What it means

A module reports a software version mismatch with the reductant quality module — typically after replacing one of the modules without programming the new unit to match the rest of the network.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant quality module monitors the condition or quality information for the diesel exhaust fluid system and communicates it to other vehicle modules. U030C sets when a module detects that the reductant quality module's software or configuration does not match what the vehicle network expects, often after replacement or incorrect programming.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module replaced without programming
  2. Wrong part number for the vehicle
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and all powertrain and aftertreatment codes to see whether the mismatch is accompanied by reductant quality or communication faults.
  2. Check service history for a reductant quality module or related module replacement, then verify the installed part and software identification for the vehicle.
  3. Review scan-tool data for reductant quality module status and messages, along with any warnings about diesel exhaust fluid or emissions-system operation.
  4. Inspect the module connector, power, ground, and CAN wiring for corrosion, damage, loose terminals, or poor connections.
  5. Test gateway communication and CAN network condition according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If the network is sound, program the correct module software and configuration, then confirm the reductant quality data is accepted.

Common fixes

  • Repair a poor connector, power, ground, or CAN connection at the reductant quality module.
  • Correct the module's vehicle configuration.
  • Reprogram the module with compatible software.
  • Replace an incompatible or faulty reductant quality module with the correct unit and program it.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives normally, a short trip to arrange diagnosis is generally reasonable, but heed any diesel exhaust fluid or emissions-system warnings. Continued operation with an unresolved aftertreatment fault can lead to emissions noncompliance or, on some vehicles, a later starting or speed restriction.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
