OBD-II fault code

U0308: Software Incompatibility with Body Control Module

What it means

The BCM software does not match what other vehicle modules expect. Comfort or lighting features can behave erratically until reflashing or coding is performed.

How it works

The body control module (BCM) manages body functions such as lighting and comfort features and exchanges configuration and status messages with other modules over the vehicle network. U0308 sets when another module detects that the BCM's software or configuration is incompatible with what it expects, which can happen after a BCM replacement or when network messages are routed incorrectly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Incompatible flash after BCM swap
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record all module codes and freeze-frame details before clearing anything to see which modules report a mismatch or communication fault.
  2. Check whether the BCM or another network module was recently replaced, updated, or coded, and compare its installed software and vehicle configuration with the manufacturer's requirements.
  3. Test the affected lights and comfort features and review live data to identify which modules are receiving unexpected or missing BCM messages.
  4. Inspect the BCM, gateway, and CAN wiring connectors for loose terminals, corrosion, damage, or poor grounds.
  5. Check CAN network resistance and signal quality using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, including the terminating resistors, before replacing a module.
  6. If wiring and network checks pass, have the BCM configuration and gateway message routing verified and corrected with compatible programming.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged BCM or CAN network connection.
  • Correct BCM coding or configuration to match the vehicle.
  • Install compatible BCM software or reprogram the replacement BCM.
  • Repair or replace a faulty gateway or CAN terminating resistor after confirming the fault.

Can I keep driving?

If only comfort or lighting features are affected and the vehicle drives and signals normally, limit driving to what is needed for repair. Do not drive if essential lights or other safety functions are unreliable, since the network fault may disrupt additional modules.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
