What it means
The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with the hybrid engine disconnect clutch actuator. Switching between EV-only and combustion drive can no longer be commanded smoothly.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator separates or reconnects the combustion engine and hybrid drivetrain during transitions between electric and engine-powered driving. U02AA sets when the network stops receiving messages from the actuator, so the hybrid controller cannot reliably command that changeover.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify related hybrid, clutch, transmission, or low-voltage faults.
- Check live hybrid data for engine disconnect clutch communication and commanded-versus-reported operating status.
- Inspect the clutch actuator connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Check actuator power and ground using the manufacturer's wiring information and specified safety precautions for the hybrid system.
- Test the actuator's network circuit for opens, shorts, or poor connections according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- If supplies and network wiring pass, have actuator failure confirmed before replacement because clutch work may require model-specific setup.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded clutch actuator connector.
- Repair damaged wiring to the engine disconnect clutch actuator.
- Restore the actuator's power or ground connection.
- Repair an open or short in its network circuit.
- Replace or set up the actuator if testing confirms its failure and the manufacturer's procedure calls for it.
Can I keep driving?
Hybrid transitions may become rough, unavailable, or leave the vehicle in a reduced-power mode. Avoid relying on electric-only operation or continuing if the vehicle changes drive mode unpredictably; stop if propulsion becomes erratic.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
