OBD-II fault code

U0293: Lost Communication With Hybrid/EV Powertrain Control Module

What it means

The reporting module has lost communication with the hybrid/EV powertrain control module. It sets this code when expected messages from that module are not received for a specified time.

How it works

The hybrid or EV powertrain control module coordinates key propulsion functions and sends operating messages to other vehicle modules. This code sets when a reporting module does not receive those expected messages for the required time, which can prevent the vehicle from entering Ready mode or using hybrid propulsion.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module power or ground fault
  2. Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
  3. CAN bus short or open circuit
  4. Hybrid/EV control module failure
  5. Low 12-volt battery voltage

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV warning message
  • Reduced or unavailable hybrid propulsion
  • Vehicle may not start or enter ready mode
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for freeze-frame data and other communication codes, and check whether several modules report the hybrid/EV powertrain controller missing.
  2. Check 12-volt battery condition and connections first, because low system voltage can interrupt module startup and network communication.
  3. Inspect the powertrain controller's accessible low-voltage connectors and network harness for looseness, corrosion, water or damage; do not disturb high-voltage cables.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, verify the controller's specified power and ground, then test the network circuits for opens or shorts according to manufacturer procedures.
  5. If supplies and network wiring are sound, follow manufacturer diagnostics to assess the controller and any gateway routing it depends on; leave high-voltage diagnosis to qualified personnel.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak 12-volt battery if testing confirms it cannot support the vehicle's specified voltage, and clean or secure its connections.
  • Repair a loose, corroded or damaged low-voltage connector at the hybrid/EV powertrain controller.
  • Repair an open or short in the controller's network wiring.
  • Restore the controller's specified power or ground by repairing the confirmed feed, fuse or ground fault.
  • Replace the controller only after its power, ground, network and gateway paths test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle will not enter Ready mode or hybrid propulsion is unavailable, do not rely on it for a journey; arrange recovery if it cannot move safely. If it remains drivable, go only as far as needed to reach a safe location, since propulsion may become reduced or unavailable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
