OBD-II fault code

U0258: Lost Communication With Radio Transceiver

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the radio transceiver. The code identifies the communication loss; radio-related functions may be affected.

How it works

The radio transceiver communicates over the vehicle network to support radio reception and related functions. U0258 sets when a monitoring module stops receiving the expected messages from the transceiver.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Radio reception or related functions may be unavailable
  • A warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan other modules for communication codes to check whether the fault is isolated to the radio transceiver.
  2. Check whether radio reception or related functions have failed, and note whether the problem changes with vehicle power state.
  3. Inspect the radio transceiver connectors and network wiring for loose connections, corrosion, pin damage, or a short or open circuit.
  4. Check the transceiver's power and ground using the manufacturer's procedure, since a supply interruption can cause lost communication.
  5. If power and ground are good, test the network circuits to the radio transceiver for opens or shorts following the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose radio transceiver connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded network wiring or connector terminals.
  • Restore a missing power or ground connection to the transceiver.
  • Replace the radio transceiver if its wiring and supplies are correct but it still does not communicate.

Can I keep driving?

A fault limited to radio reception or related entertainment functions generally does not prevent driving. Do not operate the radio or investigate its wiring while driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
