OBD-II fault code

U0248: Lost Communication With Remote Accessory Module

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the remote access module. The code identifies the communication loss; remote-access functions may be affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The remote access module handles vehicle functions assigned to remote access and communicates with other modules over the vehicle network. U0248 sets when expected messages from that module stop arriving, which may disable or limit the vehicle's remote-access features.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loss of power or ground to the module
  2. Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
  3. Failed module

Symptoms

  • Remote-access functions may be unavailable or limited
  • A warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and review event data for other network faults recorded with U0248.
  2. Check which remote-access functions fail and whether the vehicle displays a related warning.
  3. Inspect the remote access module connector and network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water intrusion, or damage.
  4. Check the module's power and ground circuits according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test the network wiring to the remote access module for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  6. If power, ground, and network tests pass, use manufacturer diagnostics to determine whether the module has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded remote access module connector.
  • Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals serving the module.
  • Restore the module's power or ground supply.
  • Replace the remote access module if circuit checks pass and diagnostics confirm internal failure.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the vehicle starts and operates normally, but remote-access functions may not work. Keep a reliable way to unlock and secure the vehicle, and do not assume a remote command has succeeded.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
