OBD-II fault code

U0244: Lost Communication With Running Board Control Module A

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from running board control module A. The code identifies the communication loss; powered running-board functions may be affected if equipped.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

Running board control module A manages the powered running-board functions assigned to it, if the vehicle is equipped with them, and exchanges messages with other modules over the network. U0244 sets when expected messages from module A stop arriving, potentially preventing those boards from deploying or retracting as designed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loss of power or ground to the module
  2. Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
  3. Failed module

Symptoms

  • Powered running-board functions may be unavailable or limited if equipped
  • A warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and review event data for other faults that could affect the network shared with module A.
  2. If equipped, operate the running boards and note whether the A-controlled board or functions fail to deploy, retract, or respond.
  3. Inspect module A's connector and exposed wiring for impact damage, corrosion, water, or loose terminals, especially near the board mechanism.
  4. Check the module's power and ground circuits using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test the network wiring to running board control module A for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
  6. If wiring and supplies pass, use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to determine whether module A has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded module A connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals near the running board control module.
  • Restore the module's power or ground supply.
  • Replace running board control module A if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

If a powered board is stuck out, loose, or obstructing a door or wheel area, do not drive until it is secured. Otherwise, drive cautiously and do not rely on the affected board for entry or exit.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
