OBD-II fault code

U0230: Lost Communication With Rear Gate Module

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the rear gate module. The code identifies the communication loss; it does not establish whether the vehicle has a power-operated gate or which functions are affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The rear gate module manages or reports rear-gate functions and exchanges messages with other vehicle modules. U0230 sets when a module stops receiving the expected messages from the rear gate module; it does not establish whether the gate is powered or which gate function has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loss of power or ground to the module
  2. Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
  3. Failed module

Symptoms

  • Rear gate functions may be unavailable or limited
  • A communication fault may be stored; a warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and freeze-frame details, noting whether other rear-body modules are also offline.
  2. Check the rear gate's manual and powered functions, if fitted, and note whether the latch, release, or status indication is affected.
  3. Inspect the rear gate module connector and wiring, including the flexing harness between the body and gate, for damage, corrosion, water entry, or loose connections.
  4. Check the module's power and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test its network wiring for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If the supply and network circuits are sound, verify rear gate module communication with a capable scan tool before considering module replacement.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded rear gate module connector.
  • Repair broken or damaged wiring in the rear gate flex harness.
  • Restore a failed power or ground connection.
  • Replace the rear gate module if its circuits test correctly but it remains offline.

Can I keep driving?

If the rear gate will not latch securely, do not drive until it is secured because it could open or allow cargo to fall out. If it is latched and secure, driving may be possible, but powered or remote gate functions may not work.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
