What it means
Communication with Particulate Matter Sensor B was not received as expected. The code does not by itself establish the sensor's location or the effect on other systems.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Particulate Matter Sensor B reports exhaust particulate information to vehicle controllers, typically as part of emissions monitoring. This code sets when expected messages from Sensor B are missing; it does not establish the sensor's location or the failed network segment.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor unpowered or wiring broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to check for other network or emissions faults that appeared at the same time.
- Confirm that Sensor B is the device that is not responding in the vehicle's scan-tool data, without assuming its physical location from the code alone.
- Inspect Sensor B's connector and harness for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or a disconnected plug.
- Check Sensor B's power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the sensor has power and ground, test the applicable communication wiring and gateway routing before condemning the sensor.
Common fixes
- Reconnect Sensor B's loose connector.
- Repair heat-damaged or chafed wiring and corroded terminals at Sensor B.
- Restore the sensor's power or ground supply.
- Repair the network or gateway fault, or replace Sensor B if testing confirms it has failed.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain driveable, but emissions monitoring can be impaired and an emissions warning may remain on. Avoid extended use if the engine runs poorly or additional exhaust-system warnings appear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
