What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the brake system control module. Brake assist functions managed by that module may be limited or unavailable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The brake system control module manages brake-related electronic functions and sends status messages to other modules. U0129 sets when those messages are missing, so brake assist functions managed by the module may be reduced or unavailable. The code alone does not confirm a mechanical brake failure, so pay attention to pedal feel and warning lights.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Brake system control module power or ground fault
- Damaged network wiring or connector
- Brake system control module failure
- Low system voltage
Symptoms
- Brake or ABS warning
- Brake assist functions may be limited or unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- If the brake pedal feels abnormal or a brake warning is on, stop safely; otherwise scan all modules and save freeze-frame data and related ABS, brake, network, and low-voltage codes.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation, since low voltage can interrupt communication with the brake system module.
- Inspect the module’s connectors, power and ground wiring, and network harness for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Use a scan tool to check whether the brake system control module responds and whether other modules also report it as offline.
- If its power and ground are correct but it remains offline, test the network circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Correct a weak battery or charging-system fault.
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded brake system module connector.
- Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
- Restore the brake module’s power or ground supply.
- Replace the brake system control module if its circuits test correctly but communication does not return.
Can I keep driving?
Because brake assist functions may be reduced, avoid driving if the pedal feels hard or unusual, braking performance changes, or a brake warning appears; arrange recovery in those cases. If braking feels normal, drive only as needed and cautiously to a safe repair location.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
