OBD-II fault code

U0101: Lost Communication With TCM

What it means

A control module has lost communication with the transmission control module. Transmission behavior and available functions depend on the vehicle; this code alone does not specify a gear or limp-home mode.

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) manages transmission functions and exchanges data with other modules over the vehicle network. U0101 is set when a module expected to receive TCM messages cannot communicate with it, potentially because the TCM has lost power or ground, the network connection is disrupted, or the TCM or gateway has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loss of TCM power or ground
  2. Open, shorted, or damaged communication wiring or connector
  3. TCM or gateway fault

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for U0101 and related codes, noting which modules cannot contact the TCM and whether the transmission has warning messages or abnormal behavior.
  2. Check freeze-frame or event data and TCM communication status to see when the messages stopped and whether the fault is current or intermittent.
  3. Inspect the TCM connectors and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water intrusion, or damage.
  4. Check TCM power and ground circuits under the conditions and to the specifications provided by the manufacturer.
  5. If TCM power, ground, and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's network tests to check the gateway and determine whether the TCM itself is at fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded TCM connector.
  • Repair a damaged TCM power, ground, or communication wire.
  • Repair a faulty gateway or replace a TCM confirmed to have failed after its circuits are verified.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is abnormal, the transmission warning is on, or the vehicle is in a reduced-function mode, avoid driving and arrange safe transport because continued operation can worsen transmission problems or leave you without predictable gear changes. If it shifts normally, drive only as needed to reach a safe location for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
