What it means
A control module detects voltage below the expected level on the positive conductor of vehicle communication bus B. It sets the code when the bus line remains below its calibrated voltage threshold.
How it works
Bus B carries data between connected modules over paired lines, including the (+) high-side conductor. U0040 is set when a module detects that this positive line stays below its calibrated voltage range, which can disrupt communication even if the wire is not fully open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground on bus wire
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Poor connector connection
- Faulty module pulling the bus low
- Low system voltage
Symptoms
- Communication warning lights
- Multiple warning messages
- Intermittent system operation
- Some systems unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record codes and freeze-frame data, and check system voltage first to see whether low vehicle voltage coincides with the bus B (+) fault.
- Use scan-tool live network data to see whether bus B communication drops out and which modules are affected when the condition occurs.
- Inspect the bus B (+) wire and connectors for chafing against ground, crushed insulation, loose pins, or corrosion.
- Check module power and grounds, then test the positive conductor for a short to ground and measure its signal behavior using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and supply checks pass, isolate possible modules pulling bus B (+) low and check gateway routing against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Charge or repair the vehicle battery or charging system if low system voltage is confirmed.
- Repair chafed bus B (+) insulation or a short to ground.
- Clean, secure, or replace a poor bus B connector terminal.
- Repair a module or gateway only after tests show it is pulling the positive line below specification.
Can I keep driving?
If only nonessential functions are affected, limit driving and watch for worsening communication warnings. Stop and arrange recovery if steering, braking, stability control, or another essential system becomes unavailable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
