OBD-II fault code

P2CF8: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve D Control Circuit Driver Current/Temperature Too High

What it means

The output driver for the engine coolant bypass valve D actuator reports current or junction temperature above its protection threshold. Stalled actuator or short to ground.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant bypass valve D routes coolant through different parts of the engine cooling circuit. The control module monitors the valve actuator’s electrical load and driver temperature; this code sets when the driver detects excessive current or heat, which can happen if the valve is jammed or its control wire is shorted to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bypass actuator mechanically jammed
  2. Control wire shorted to ground

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
  • Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
  • Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and cooling-system live data to see when the fault occurred and whether coolant temperature or valve command looks abnormal.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect bypass valve D and its connector for damage, coolant intrusion, corrosion, or displaced pins.
  3. Check the valve and linkage for signs of binding or obstruction that could stall the actuator.
  4. Inspect the valve D control wire for chafing or contact with ground, especially near the valve and along moving or hot components.
  5. Test the actuator and control circuit for excessive current or a short to ground using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or chafed wiring at the valve D control circuit.
  • Clean or repair the valve D connector and restore secure pin contact.
  • Remove the cause of binding or replace a mechanically jammed bypass valve D actuator.
  • Replace the bypass valve D actuator if testing confirms it is drawing excessive current.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and stop safely if the engine overheats or a power-limited warning appears. A bypass valve that cannot move correctly can disrupt engine temperature control, weaken cabin heat, or worsen cold starting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
