OBD-II fault code

P2CE2: Intake Air Heater C Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The control circuit of intake air heater C reports a circuit range/performance condition. Cold-start preheating cannot be commanded as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Intake air heater C warms incoming air to help the engine start and run cleanly in cold conditions. The control module monitors the circuit's electrical response and sets P2CE2 when heater C operates outside its expected range or performance, such as from weak heater output or low supply voltage under load.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Heater element aged - low output
  2. Supply voltage low under load
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Hard starting in cold weather
  • Rough running or white exhaust smoke after a cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and any intake-heater codes, including ambient temperature and system voltage, and note whether the starting symptoms occur in cold weather.
  2. Inspect heater C's element connector, wiring, and supply connections for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage that could reduce output.
  3. Check battery and charging system condition, then assess supply voltage at heater C while it is commanded on against the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare heater C's element resistance and output with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the element has weakened.
  5. If heater C's supply and element check out, test its temperature-sensing or feedback circuit and control response using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose heater C power and ground connections.
  • Repair high-resistance wiring or connector contacts in the heater C circuit.
  • Replace the intake air heater C element if its output is below the manufacturer's specification.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty heater C feedback sensor or control component.

Can I keep driving?

The engine may be drivable in warmer weather, but cold starts can become difficult and produce rough running or white exhaust smoke. Limit repeated cold starts and address the fault before relying on the vehicle in freezing conditions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
