What it means
Cooling fan 3 runs below the calibrated minimum speed for the commanded duty. Mechanical resistance high or motor weakened.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Cooling fan 3 provides airflow through the radiator and condenser when commanded by the control system. This code sets when fan 3 turns more slowly than expected for its commanded duty, reducing cooling airflow particularly at idle or low road speed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fan motor bearing worn
- Supply voltage low under load
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine temperature may rise, especially at low speeds or while idling
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live fan command and reported speed to establish when fan 3 is underspeed.
- With the engine off and cool, inspect fan 3 blades and shroud for debris, damage or rubbing that could slow it.
- Inspect fan 3 connector, fuse and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals or heat damage.
- Measure fan 3 supply voltage under command and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If voltage is correct, check fan 3 motor for bearing resistance or internal wear.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or correct shroud contact restricting fan 3.
- Clean or repair fan 3 electrical connections and wiring.
- Replace a blown fan 3 fuse after checking for the cause.
- Replace the fan 3 motor if it remains slow with correct supply and free blade movement.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid prolonged idling, slow traffic and towing if engine temperature is rising, and monitor the temperature gauge. Stop safely if the engine overheats to prevent serious damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
