OBD-II fault code

P2CB2: Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump B Underspeed

What it means

Charge air cooler coolant pump B reports a underspeed condition. CAC coolant loop circulation is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pump B circulates coolant through the charge air cooler loop, which removes heat from compressed intake air. The control module compares the pump’s reported speed with its commanded operation and sets this code when pump B runs slower than expected, reducing coolant flow.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical load increased
  2. Supply voltage low under load

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Possible charge-air temperature warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live pump B command and reported speed to see when the underspeed occurs.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect pump B, its coolant hoses and connectors for leaks, damage, blockage or signs of mechanical strain.
  3. Check the pump B supply and ground wiring for loose, corroded or heat-damaged connections that could cause voltage to drop under load.
  4. Measure voltage at pump B while it is commanded on and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the supply is correct, check the pump and CAC coolant loop for restricted flow or excessive mechanical load.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose pump B electrical connections.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor power and ground connections.
  • Restore coolant flow by clearing a restriction or correcting a hose problem.
  • Replace pump B if it remains slow despite correct supply voltage and an unobstructed loop.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and towing because reduced CAC cooling can raise charge-air temperatures and trigger reduced power. Stop safely if a temperature warning appears or engine power drops sharply.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
