OBD-II fault code

P2C80: AIR System Pump Overspeed Bank 1

What it means

The secondary air injection (AIR) pump on bank 1 exceeds the calibrated maximum speed. Indicates load lost or supply voltage too high.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The secondary air injection pump supplies fresh air to the exhaust during cold starts to help reduce emissions. The control module monitors the pump’s speed and sets P2C80 when the bank 1 pump spins faster than its calibrated limit, which can happen if its impeller loses load or its supply voltage is too high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump impeller damaged - load lost
  2. Supply voltage above nominal

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Failed emissions test
  • Rougher cold start or increased exhaust emissions

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check commanded AIR pump operation and reported speed to confirm the overspeed occurs on bank 1.
  2. With the system cool and off, inspect the bank 1 pump, impeller area, air hoses, and connectors for damage, looseness, or signs that the impeller has lost its load.
  3. Check the bank 1 pump wiring and charging or supply circuit for poor connections, damaged insulation, or evidence of voltage above the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Measure pump supply voltage while it is commanded on and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and voltage are sound, test the bank 1 pump and its speed feedback using the vehicle's service information.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged bank 1 pump connector or wiring.
  • Correct an overvoltage condition in the pump supply circuit.
  • Replace the bank 1 AIR pump if its impeller or speed feedback is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but cold-start emissions can rise and it may fail an emissions test. Avoid repeated cold starts until the pump and its supply voltage are checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
