OBD-II fault code

P2C3F: Fan 4 Control Circuit Low

What it means

The control circuit of cooling fan 4 reports a control circuit low condition. Fan operation cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Cooling fan 4 is controlled through a circuit that the module monitors while commanding fan operation. This code indicates the fan 4 control circuit is low, consistent with a control wire shorted to ground, a shorted relay coil, or a poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Relay coil shorted
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine may overheat in traffic or at idle

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and command fan 4 with a scan tool, if supported, to confirm whether the low-circuit fault coincides with the command.
  2. Inspect fan 4 wiring and connectors for a pinched control wire touching ground and for corrosion at the relay and fan connectors.
  3. Check the fan 4 relay coil and socket for damage or signs of a short, using the vehicle wiring information.
  4. Test the control wire for a short to ground and check connector terminal condition according to the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
  5. Test the relay coil and control circuit against the manufacturer's specification, then verify fan operation after repairs.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair corroded fan 4 connector or relay socket terminals.
  • Repair the fan 4 control wire where it is shorted to ground.
  • Replace the fan 4 relay if its coil is shorted.
  • Repair any damaged connector that prevents reliable control.

Can I keep driving?

Fan 4 may not operate when needed, increasing the risk of overheating in traffic or at idle. Avoid heavy loads and slow traffic, watch engine temperature, and stop safely if it rises.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
