OBD-II fault code

P2B83: Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump A Overspeed/Air In System

What it means

The charge air cooler coolant pump A runs above the calibrated maximum speed without producing the expected flow. Indicates air pocket in the coolant loop.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Charge-air cooler coolant pump A circulates coolant through the charge-air cooling loop to reduce intake-air temperature. This code sets when pump A spins faster than expected but the loop does not show the expected flow, often because air is trapped or coolant is low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Air pocket in coolant loop
  2. Coolant level low

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power under load
  • Charge-air cooling performance may be reduced

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review pump A command, reported speed, and charge-air temperature data to see when cooling performance falls off.
  2. When the system is cool, check the charge-air cooler coolant reservoir and loop for low coolant, visible leaks, or signs of recent service that may have introduced air.
  3. Inspect pump A's electrical connector and coolant hoses for damage, loose connections, kinks, or leaks that could restrict circulation.
  4. Check pump A operation and coolant flow using the manufacturer's specified procedure, looking for a high-speed pump with weak or interrupted circulation.
  5. If coolant level and flow path are sound, test pump A's speed feedback and control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Top up the correct coolant if low and repair the source of any leak.
  • Remove trapped air from the charge-air cooler coolant loop using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair a kinked or damaged hose restricting pump A flow.
  • Replace pump A if it overspeeds without producing the expected circulation after the loop is filled and bled.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced charge-air cooling can cause power loss under load, so avoid towing, hard acceleration, and sustained high-speed driving until the coolant loop is checked. Stop if coolant leaks or temperatures rise abnormally.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
