What it means
The negative pump current control of the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 1 reports a circuit open condition. Wide-band lambda regulation on the intake side is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake-air oxygen sensor on bank 1 is a wide-band sensor that measures oxygen in the incoming air so the control module can manage air-fuel regulation. The module monitors the sensor’s negative pump-current control path and sets P2AE6 when that path appears electrically open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in pump current wire
- Internal open in pump cell
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 intake-air sensor readings with the other bank, if available, to see when the fault occurs.
- Locate the bank 1 intake-air oxygen sensor using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector for a pushed-back terminal, poor seating, or damage.
- Trace the negative pump-current wire from the bank 1 sensor connector toward the control module and look for breaks, chafing, or heat damage.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check continuity through the wire and terminals to find an open connection.
- If wiring and connector continuity are sound, test the sensor pump cell according to the manufacturer's procedure and replace the sensor if its internal circuit is open.
Common fixes
- Reseat a loose bank 1 sensor connector or terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged negative pump-current wire.
- Replace a terminal that has lost contact or is pushed back in the connector.
- Replace the bank 1 intake-air oxygen sensor if its pump cell is internally open.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently for a short time if the engine runs normally, but avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary trips because intake-side mixture control and emissions performance may suffer. Stop if it begins running very roughly or loses power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
