OBD-II fault code

P2AB0: Particulate Matter Sensor Processor Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a processing performance fault inside the particulate matter (PM) sensor module. Internal self-tests fail or computed soot mass is implausible.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The particulate matter sensor module monitors exhaust particles and processes its measurements for the engine control module, commonly as part of emissions-system monitoring. This performance code sets when the sensor module's internal checks fail or its computed soot measurement is implausible, after accounting for possible power, ground, or communication faults.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal particulate matter sensor module fault
  2. Module power, ground, or communication fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Reduced engine power
  • Increased exhaust emissions

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review particulate matter sensor data and related emissions codes to see whether the fault appears with a communication loss or an implausible soot reading.
  2. Inspect the sensor module's connector, harness, and nearby wiring for heat damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or exhaust-related damage.
  3. Check the module's power and ground connections and any relevant fuses against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use a scan tool to check whether the engine control module communicates with the particulate matter sensor module and whether its self-test or status data reports a processing fault.
  5. If power, ground, and communication are sound, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to confirm an internal module failure before replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or heat-damaged particulate matter sensor module connector or wiring.
  • Restore a failed module power or ground connection.
  • Repair the communication circuit if scan data shows the module is not responding.
  • Replace the particulate matter sensor module if its internal processing fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Short local driving may be possible if the vehicle runs normally, but arrange diagnosis soon because the fault can increase emissions and may lead to reduced power. Avoid heavy loads if power is limited, and stop if the vehicle becomes unsafe to drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
