What it means
Voltage on the engine coolant bypass valve B position sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The position sensor on coolant bypass valve B provides a signal the ECM uses to determine valve position. P2AA9 sets when that signal voltage falls below the expected range, commonly because the signal wire is grounded, the sensor is internally shorted, or a connector has poor contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Coolant temperature fluctuations
- Longer warm-up or reduced cabin heat
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live valve B position and related codes to see when the low signal appears.
- Inspect the valve B position sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or a signal wire touching ground.
- Check connector pins for corrosion or poor contact that could pull down the sensor signal.
- Test the valve B sensor signal wire for a short to ground using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring and connector are sound, test the valve B sensor for an internal short and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded valve B sensor connector pins and restore a secure connection.
- Repair the signal wire where it is shorted to ground.
- Replace the valve B position sensor if it is internally shorted.
- Clear the code and verify that valve B position feedback returns to a plausible range.
Can I keep driving?
A short drive may be reasonable if coolant temperature remains normal, but monitor the gauge and stop if the engine overheats. The low valve B position signal can impair coolant bypass control, causing temperature fluctuations or reduced cabin heat.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
