What it means
The AFCM detects that the flow through the alternative fuel return line is below the expected minimum for the active operating mode. Restricted line, stuck valve, or pump output too low.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The alternative-fuel return line carries excess fuel back toward the tank, while the AFCM monitors whether enough flow is available for the current operating mode. P2AA2 sets when measured return flow falls below the expected minimum, often because the line is restricted or the valve cannot open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Return line restricted by debris
- Return line valve stuck closed
Symptoms
- Check-engine or alternative-fuel system warning light, if equipped
- Reduced power or poor acceleration
- Rough running or stalling
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check AFCM live data for return-flow readings and valve commands to confirm when the shortfall occurs.
- Inspect the accessible return line for kinks, crushing, leaks, or visible debris that could restrict flow.
- Check whether the return-line valve responds to scan-tool commands, if supported, and note any sticking or failure to move.
- Inspect the valve and line for debris or blockage using the manufacturer's service procedure.
- If the line and valve are clear and operating, assess alternative-fuel pump output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove the obstruction or repair the kinked or damaged return line.
- Clean the return line if debris is restricting flow, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair or replace the return-line valve if it is stuck closed.
- Repair the fuel delivery fault if pump output is below the manufacturer's specification.
- Clear the code and verify return flow in the operating mode that triggered it.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and long trips if power is reduced or the engine runs roughly, because inadequate return flow can impair alternative-fuel operation and lead to stalling. Stop safely if the engine begins to stall.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
