What it means
The alternative fuel pump A compression stroke valve control circuit signal is lower than expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The control module operates the alternative-fuel pump A compression stroke valve through an electrical control circuit. P2A81 sets when that circuit's signal is lower than expected, which can result from a control wire shorted to ground, an internally shorted valve coil, or high resistance at corroded connector pins.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in valve coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check related pump codes to determine whether the low circuit signal coincided with starting or high-load operation.
- Inspect pump A's compression stroke valve connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or a control wire touching ground.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the control circuit for shorts to ground and check connector terminal contact.
- Test the valve coil and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification to check for an internal short.
- If the valve and wiring pass, check the circuit connection at the control module using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded terminals at the compression stroke valve connector.
- Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged harness insulation.
- Replace the valve if its coil is internally shorted.
- Repair a verified poor terminal connection in the control circuit.
Can I keep driving?
This low circuit fault can disrupt pump pressure and cause long cranking, stalling, or power loss under load. Avoid driving if the vehicle stalls or loses substantial power, and stop safely if that happens.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
