What it means
The alternative fuel hydraulic pump pressure sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The alternative-fuel hydraulic pump pressure sensor measures pump pressure, and the module checks whether its signal is plausible and follows operating changes. P2A76 sets when the reading is outside the expected range or responds inaccurately, including from sensor zero drift or a mounting bias.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor zero drifted
- Sensor mounting loose - bias offset
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Alternative-fuel system warning light, if equipped
- Reduced power or poor acceleration
- Hard starting or stalling
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and live pressure readings to see whether the signal is consistently offset or fails to track pump operation.
- Inspect the pressure sensor mounting for looseness or damage that could bias its reading, and check its connector and harness.
- Compare the sensor reading at a known no-pressure or stable condition with the manufacturer's expected behavior, using the approved procedure.
- Check sensor supply, ground, and signal wiring for faults that could mimic a drifting sensor.
- Test the sensor output and mounting against the manufacturer's specification before deciding whether the sensor has aged out of calibration.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose pressure sensor mounting if the manufacturer's procedure permits adjustment or refitting.
- Repair wiring or connector faults affecting the pressure sensor signal.
- Replace the pressure sensor if testing confirms drift or out-of-range performance.
- Clear the code and confirm the reading tracks pump operation after repairs.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration if the vehicle has poor response, hard starting, or stalls, because the module may restrict alternative-fuel operation based on an unreliable pressure reading. Stop if it stalls or cannot maintain safe power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
