What it means
Voltage on the alternative fuel temperature sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The AFCM monitors the signal voltage from the alternative fuel temperature sensor. This code sets when the signal falls below its expected range, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to ground, the sensor is internally shorted, or a connector contact has degraded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or alternative-fuel system warning light
- Alternative-fuel operation may be limited
- Reduced fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and live data to confirm whether alternative-fuel temperature is stuck at an implausibly low value.
- Inspect the sensor connector and signal-wire harness for corrosion, damaged pins, or insulation worn through to ground.
- Using the manufacturer's wiring information, verify the sensor reference supply and ground.
- Test the signal wire for a short to ground and check continuity between the sensor and AFCM.
- If the wiring and contacts pass, test the temperature sensor for an internal short to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded contacts and secure the alternative fuel temperature-sensor connector.
- Repair the signal wire where it is shorted to ground or damaged.
- Replace the temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's circuit test.
Can I keep driving?
A faulty low signal can lead the AFCM to limit alternative-fuel operation and may reduce fuel economy. A short trip may be possible if the vehicle runs normally, but follow system warnings and stop if drivability deteriorates.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
