What it means
The negative current control circuit for the Bank 1 Sensor 3 oxygen sensor is below its expected electrical range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The negative-current control circuit is part of the Bank 1 Sensor 3 oxygen-sensor system, which monitors exhaust oxygen downstream on the engine’s Bank 1 side. The control module checks the circuit’s electrical level and sets P2A3C when it falls below the expected range, such as when the wiring is grounded or the sensor or connector is faulty.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring short to ground
- Faulty oxygen sensor
- Poor connector contact
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check whether the fault returns, noting the engine conditions when the Bank 1 Sensor 3 circuit was flagged low.
- Locate the Bank 1 Sensor 3 sensor using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for damage, corrosion, heat exposure, or contact with the exhaust.
- Check the connector pins and wiring for a short to ground or poor contact, following the manufacturer’s circuit diagram.
- With the sensor disconnected as directed by service information, test the circuit for continuity to ground and compare results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the wiring and connector pass, test the Bank 1 Sensor 3 oxygen sensor and its control circuit against the manufacturer’s specification before replacing any parts.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring that is shorted to ground or damaged near the exhaust.
- Clean, secure, or repair poor contact at the Bank 1 Sensor 3 connector.
- Replace the Bank 1 Sensor 3 oxygen sensor if it fails the specified tests.
Can I keep driving?
A check-engine light may be the only symptom, but the fault can affect emissions monitoring. If the engine runs normally, short trips to arrange diagnosis are generally reasonable; avoid ignoring the light if drivability changes or it begins flashing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
