What it means
The control circuit of the alternative fuel control module (AFCM) power relay is open. The relay coil cannot be energised on command.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The AFCM power relay switches electrical supply to the alternative-fuel control module when the vehicle requests that system. The engine control module monitors the relay's control circuit and sets P2A32 when it detects an open path that prevents the relay coil from being energised.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in relay control wire
- Open relay coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Alternative-fuel system warning light
- Alternative-fuel mode unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check AFCM status to confirm when the relay was commanded and whether alternative-fuel mode was unavailable.
- Inspect the AFCM power relay, its socket, and the control-wire connectors for loose plugs, corrosion, damage, or a terminal pushed back into a connector.
- With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the relay coil for continuity and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check continuity through the relay control wire between the AFCM and relay connector, flexing the harness to reveal an intermittent open.
- If wiring and coil checks pass, verify the module's relay command and connector terminal contact using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat the relay and repair a loose or pushed-back connector terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged relay control wire.
- Replace the AFCM power relay if its coil is open.
- Repair a confirmed module connector or relay-command fault.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may be unable to use alternative-fuel mode and may switch to another available fuel mode. Avoid relying on alternative fuel until the fault is repaired; if no other fuel mode is available, do not continue driving.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
