What it means
The controller detects that torque converter temperature is above its calibrated limit. The cause may involve excessive converter slip or inadequate transmission cooling.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The transmission control module estimates or measures heat in the torque converter, which transfers engine power into the transmission through fluid. P2783 sets when converter temperature rises above the module’s calibrated limit, often because the converter is slipping excessively or heat is not being carried away by the transmission cooler.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive torque converter slip
- Low transmission fluid or a fluid problem
- Restricted transmission cooler
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
- Transmission may overheat or enter a protective mode
- Shifting may become harsh or delayed
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and transmission temperature before clearing the code, and note whether it occurred during towing, slow traffic, or sustained slipping.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's specified procedure, since low or degraded fluid can reduce cooling and increase converter slip.
- Inspect the cooler lines, cooler, and airflow path for leaks, kinks, blockage, or debris that could restrict heat removal.
- Use a scan tool to compare converter slip and transmission temperature during the conditions that set the code, looking for sustained slip or continued temperature rise.
- If fluid level and cooler flow appear sound, have the converter and transmission operation assessed for internal slip or a circulation problem.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level with the specified fluid.
- Repair leaking, kinked, or damaged transmission cooler lines.
- Clean or replace a restricted transmission cooler.
- Repair the cause of excessive torque converter slip, which may require converter or transmission repair.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and prolonged stop-and-go driving; stop safely if the transmission warning appears or the vehicle enters a protective mode. Continued overheating can damage the converter, fluid, and transmission.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
