What it means
The gear shift control module A has reached over-temperature. Excessive switching activity, sustained high motor load, or insufficient cooling.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Gear shift control module A manages part of the transmission’s shift actuation and monitors its own operating temperature. This code sets when the module detects that it has become too hot, which can result from sustained actuator load or blocked cooling airflow around its air channel.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sustained high actuator load
- Cooling air channel blocked by debris
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and module temperature information to establish when module A overheated and whether the fault followed heavy shifting or sustained load.
- Inspect the module A cooling-air channel and nearby area for debris, obstruction, or damage that could restrict airflow.
- Check the module and actuator wiring and connectors for heat damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could increase electrical load.
- Review transmission operation for repeated difficult shifts or other conditions that may keep the shift actuator under sustained load.
- If airflow and wiring are sound, have actuator operation and module temperature readings checked using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove debris blocking the cooling-air channel for gear shift control module A.
- Repair damaged or loose module and actuator wiring connections.
- Correct a transmission or actuator fault that is making the shift system work under sustained load.
- Replace module A if testing confirms its temperature monitoring or internal cooling has failed.
Can I keep driving?
If shifting remains normal and there are no signs of overheating, drive gently only as needed to reach a safe place for diagnosis. Stop if shifts become delayed, harsh, or disappear; continued overheating can impair shifting and damage the module or transmission.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
